Arts Aggregate in conjunction with Mokosh Galley – a nomad gallery dedicated to promote emerging contemporary artists – are pleased to present a group show of Southern California artists, Mid-City Moment.

Nine artists will be featured in the show: Charity Algarme, Corey Dunlap, Kim Garcia, Anna Garner, Eleanor Greer, Victoria Iungerich, Sage Serrano, Elizabeth Stringer, and Charity Vincent. While the artists work with diverse mediums, the common thread of the works in the show are languages, signs, and symbols produced by these artists in order to communicate with their viewers. As Jonathan Culler argued, “context is not given but produced” and in this case it is produced by the artists and by the viewer. As spectators of these works we then become semioticians, decoding and reading their languages while constructing context.

Arts Aggregate promotes the advancement of contemporary art practice in Southern California by fostering a rich community of artists, unified by collaboration, not by medium, technique, philosophy or subject matter. However, it is clear that these artists, despite their differences, share familiar sign systems. What emerges are similar referents yet convergent connotations. These artists work within contradictory meanings of signals and significations and through their work the familiar takes new forms. For example, is a grid a structure of rigidity and confinement, an open plane of creation, or rather a mechanism for infinite illusion?

The artists will be present at the opening reception on Saturday, June 3rd. The show is directed by Victoria Iungerich and curated by Audrey Maier.
