ArtPower! presents Brazilian singer, songwriter, and actress, Thalma de Freitas. De Freitas was born into a home filled with music and creativity. She is the daughter of maestro Laercio de Freitas, a renowned pianist, arranger and composer. Her rich musical upbringing proved to be instrumental in shaping De Freitas's ear at an early age. As singer and songwriter in Rio’s legendary big band Orquestra Imperial, De Freitas’ silky and sensual voice captured the very essence of samba. For her North-American debut, Thalma joins forces with Grammy award-winning producer, pianist and saxophonist Kamau Kenyatta to illuminate power that Brazil's popular music contains. Performing compositions from the terreiros of Candomble (birthplace of the modern samba) to Ivan Lins jazz-tinged statements, De Freitas’ highly personal vision will be paying special attention to the social issues that her country's music describes. She will be our enchanting guide to "AfroBraziliance".

Visual Arts Assistant Professor Brian Cross will DJ and produce the visuals for this performance.
