Oceanic Horizons: Port Journeys & Liminal Cities

With international guest Tsutomu Okada - Chief Curator of Spiral Art Center, Tokyo, and Artistic Director of Zou-no-hana Terrace, Yokohama

Public Presentation & Reception at Oceanside Museum of Art
704 Pier View Way, Oceanside, California 92054

Friday, 8 May 2015 // 2-4PM

Join OMA’s executive director Daniel Foster in welcoming international guest Tsutomu Okada of Aichi, Japan, as Exploring Engagement launches into its fourth project, Oceanic Horizons: Port Journeys & Liminal Cities. Exploring Engagement director James Enos will lead this dynamic conversation regarding how artist investigations within social-civic spaces can work to facilitate creative inter-city exchanges and, moreover, how the Oceanic Horizons project will bridge sister cities San Diego, California, and Yokohama, Japan, through engaging a wider global-citizen community.

Mr. Okada will present the Port Journeys project, as well as the history of creative city planning in Yokohama, and his ideas regarding cultural development as a mode of civic/community engagement beyond nation states.
Current Exploring Engagement artist-in-residence Yui Inoue (Shiga, Japan) and previous Periscope Project artists-in-residence Tim Schwartz (Los Angeles) and Patrick Shields (San Diego) will discuss their works, exchanges and experiences as they inform the Oceanic Horizons project.

A reception will follow the public presentation, including music by master guitarist Phil Boroff and light refreshments.

OMA’s Exploring Engagement Artist-in-Residence Program, supported by a grant from the James Irvine Foundation.
