A lecture by artist Jamilah Sabur in collaboration with MDC Live Arts Lab. In this lecture, Jamilah will discuss her work and her current project at Dimensions Variable (DV).

Jamilah Sabur is an artist of the body, in an age and a culture where we are increasingly apt to be in our head and to own and move our body than to be a body. Lack of empathy for and insight into one another come in many ways from a fearful hesitance to give over our interior to imaginative acts but to live in words in “shoulds” and so on—Sabur’s is a mind distrustful of words, for whom language is inherently treacherous territory full of invitations to prescriptions and dictates. For most acts of imagination are short and a hurried route to statements, Sabur coaxes, prods, cajoles and begs us to steep ourselves in wordlessness. In the past Sabur has challenged us to empathize with alien and spritely creatures, here we imaginatively dwell in the mythological spaces of her own family. —Liam Kavanagh
The lecture will be at the MDC Live Arts Lab on the ground floor of Miami Dade College, Wolfson Campus, Building 1 located at 300 NE 2nd Avenue through the Southwest entrance.
