Anna Mikkola's work engages with the coexistence and the gestures of human, nature and technology. She often maps out and creates structures through which gestures are performed. Besides her own artistic work and research, she often works collaboratively. Mikkola's work has been shown, among other places, at INDEX 19 (Stockholm), Lighthouse (Brighton), TOVES (Copenhagen), SIC (Helsinki) and Jupiter Woods (London). Her work has been featured in publications such as Kaleidoscope, Rhizome and DIS Magazine. Mikkola is the co-founder of V4ULT, a platform that explores boundaries and interfaces. She is also the co-founder of a collaborative art project 'Human Interference Task Force'. She has co-curated projects at CCS Bard (Hudson, NY) and at the Architecture Museum in Helsinki, to name a few. She has lectured at Goldsmiths University (London), at ECAL (Lausanne) and at the New Museum (NYC).

Her project V4ULT is a pan-nordic episodic platform inhabiting different built sites and structures. V4ULT was established by Anna Mikkola and Hanna Nilsson in 2013. It’s a transdisciplinary project where the practices of an artist, designer, curator, writer and editor merge and overlap. The project was run from an unused walk-in closet in the corner of their shared studio room. The unassumingly small closet functioned as a space for testing new ways to exhibit and document artworks as well as working around spatial limitations. V4ULT hosted ten exhibitions between June and October 2013 in their first location in Kreuzberg and four exhibitions between December 2014 and March 2015 in their second location in Treptower. In 2014 V4ULT conceived and edited a book “a gesture waves us on answering our own wave” published with NERO. The book includes newly commissioned texts on the topic of an interface by Benjamin Bratton, Jesse Darling, Martti Kalliala and Lucy Chinen amongst others. The book was launched with a performance at Center in Berlin, Arcadia Missa in London and SIC gallery in Helsinki. In 2016 V4ULT will contribute to a book ‘The Born-Digital Art Institution’ edited by Rhizome and published by Sternberg Press – http://v4ult.cc/

Anna Mikkola and Matilda Tjäder established 'Human Interference Task Force' in 2014. The project looks into phenomena that is alien to human perception. The project emerges in episodes as continuously evolving research on the resonance between humans and earthly materials. Tying abstract topics to concrete scenarios such as the danger of nuclear waste, the project combines philosophical tools and aesthetic exploration, such as movement research, sound, video and text. Their first episode 'Community of Cells' was exhibited as part of 'biotic/abiotic' at the Gallery Apart in Rome (2014) and at PAF (Performing Arts Forum) in France (2015). The second episode 'The Alien Gesture of the Hum' was shown as part of ‘Tower Show: EGG’ in Malmö (2015). The third episode took the form as a performative exhibition ‘Insulation (Mounting Layers)’ as a culmination of a month-long residency at HIAP in Helsinki.

Mikkola has also collaborated with Katrina Burch under her pseudonym Yoneda Lemma, which is a platform for abstract exploration, experimental research and productions. Yoneda’s complex harmonic layers dig into sound, shifting sonic elements from one fiction to another. The collaboration interweave Mikkola’s moving image and/or installation with Burch’ electronic music composition to encounter Xenofeminist thinking and being with the earth’s evolution.
