Daniel Guzmán’s drawings, paintings, and installations are informed by a slew of sources, including comic books, punk rock, heavy metal, Roberto Bolaño’s writing, Gabriel Orozco’s art, and Mexican mural painting. Exploring his Mexican roots, Guzmán focuses on rituals like Aztec bloodletting ceremonies to examine contemporary violence. For a 2009 exhibition, Guzmán made a horror film that featured two Mexican intellectuals on the run from a mob of zombies. For New York Dolls (2004), Guzmán drew from New York’s punk rock scene, depicting the early 1970s protopunk band of the same name.
