November 2010

Magnum Photos in association with HP announced Mrs. Yvonne Venegas of Mexico, the recipient of the 2010 Expression Photography Award. Her photographic project entitled “Maria Elvia De Hank” illustrated a deep sensibility and insight into the realm of social privilege and gender in Mexico. Mrs. Venegas’ essay was chosen by the jury from photo essays submitted by photographers in over 150 countries worldwide.

The announcement was made in Brighton, England by Martin Parr within the context of The Brighton Photo Biennial in which he guest curated.

Magnum Jury

Magnum photographers comprising the 2010 jury were: Martin Parr, Jim Goldberg, Trent Parke and Mark Power.

Excerpt of Mrs. Venegas’ project statement:
‘Maria Elvia de Hank is a view into the life, family and environment of the wife of eccentric millionaire and former Tijuana Mayor Jorge Hank Rohn. This body of work focuses on Mexican privilege and gender, exploring how the woman of one of the wealthiest entrepreneurs of Mexico, builds with a perfectionist touch a social and beauty ideal, portrayed within the light and dust of Northern Mexico.’

Comments about Yvonne’s work on behalf of the jury by Martin Parr:
‘You could feel by looking at the photographs that Yvonne’s involvement was very relaxed and that she was able to document this unusual and wealthy family in Mexico with a great sense of rapport and intimacy. When we think of about Latin America, we often think about black and white great tradition from places like Mexico and it was very refreshing to see this very new perspective.’
