Biography:
Teri Sowell teaches African and Pacific Island Art History, in addition to courses that focus on curatorial issues and ritual theory. Her most recent research focuses on the arts of Samoa, particularly artistic practices associated with the body, including tattoo. She has organized two recent traveling exhibitions, "The Space Between: Ritual Transformations" (2006) and "Asking for Eyes: The Visual Voice of Southeast Africa" (2004) and edited their accompanying catalogues. Dr. Sowell also curated the award-winning exhibition and authored the catalogue "Worn with Pride: Celebrating Samoan Artistic Heritage" for the Oceanside Museum of Art. As a curator at the Brooklyn Museum (1993-95), she reinstalled the Pacific galleries and initiated a docent program of the Pacific Collection, and was a Curatorial Associate at the Indianapolis Museum of Art (1990). In addition to her numerous publications, she frequently presents professional papers at national and international conferences, including the Asia-Pacific Arts Forum, College Art Association, Association for Social Anthropology in Oceania, and the European Society for Oceanists. Dr. Sowell earned her PhD (1999) and MA (1992) at Indiana University, and a BA at UCSD (1998).
