Biography:
Li Huai received her BA in fine arts at the Beijing Film Academy in 1982 and her MFA in art at CalArts in 1990. Her specialties include installation, painting, drawing, mixed media, and Chinese calligraphy and brush painting. In thematic terms, her work deals with various issues related to East-West cultural interaction in an increasingly transnational age, including issues involving the Asian diaspora. Her major one person shows include Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (Self Discipline: An Installation) and the San Diego Museum of Art (Li Huai: An Artist in Two Cultures), and her work has been in group exhibitions in various international venues in Japan, Mexico, Canada, South Africa, and Italy.
In recent years she has developed two experimental studio art courses that use the complex dynamics of Chinese calligraphy as the point of departure: VIS 105D (The Aesthetics of Chinese Calligraphy), an introductory course, and VIS 105E (Chinese Calligraphy as Installation), an advanced course for students who have already taken VIS 105D.
