Artist Manny Farber's career a celebration of details...
Manny Farber has pursued dual careers as a film critic and painter since 1941. Farber served as the film critic for The New Republic, The Nation, Time Magazine, The New Leader, Cavalier, and Artforum before joining the Visual Arts Department in 1970. A collection of Farber's early criticism was published under the title of Negative Space and later reprinted as Movies. Since 1975, he has written in collaboration with Patricia Patterson and their work has been published primarily in City Magazine and Film Comment.
As a painter Farber is represented by the O. K. Harris Gallery in New York and has exhibited work there on a regular basis. A retrospective of his paintings was held at the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art in 1978. His work has been reviewed most recently in Art in America (January, 1974 and September, 1977) and Arts Magazine (December, 1976 and September, 1977).
Farber/Patterson's film criticism appeared in the summer and fall issues of City Magazine (1975) and included articles on Altman, Coppola, Herzog, Roeg, Scorcese, Milius, Duras, and Straub. Their writings in Film Comment (1975 to present) have included "Taxi Driver," "Jeanne Dielman," and the New York Film Festival among a number of other subjects. An extensive interview with Farber and Patterson by Rick Thompson was published in Film Comment (May-June, 1977).
