The inner revolutionaries

By Suzanne Wright

At this evening event the audience can participate in their own inner revolution, with the aid of wigs and disco. Within this there is a certain amount of anonymity, and a collective energy that helps participants to free themselves of inhibitions and allow a “hidden self” to emerge. This sense of freedom and collective unity on the dance floor can be liberating on a deep level, a form of catharsis.

Suzanne Wright’s cabaret style karaoke performance embodied the affect we experience in the face of the communal and our reactions to mass emotion. In this case, the climax of the days events and celebration through the sharing of group performativity. Compereing as a drag king, she electrified the room with her intense energy through song and witty commentary. Actively lowering peoples boundaries and enabling them to let go of their inhibitions.
