This performance, with Jerry Truong and Megan Philip, references “The Autonomy of Affect”, where Brian Massumi talks about the distinction between logical signifiers, or content, and its effect on the viewer in terms of affect. Their desire to evoke different intensities of the sensation of music is experienced through the visual cue of hands keeping a rhythm. At what level of consciousness does something like this occur? Is it the result of social conditioning or something more primal, universal?
