The lights dim and out of the black appears a man who is facing away from us. Soft flickers of sound arise, the softened sounds that usually come when one is drowning out the world, as though one is daydreaming or unwillingly falling to sleep. The unknown man is now revealed to us and I begin to think that there is ambiguity to gender; later upon further research I find that the word Androgyne made it’s first appearance in Judaism (Genesis, Leviticus). Mauricio’s prior investigations of Jewish mysticism have been channeled poetically and with tender and subtle device, so soft that I question whether he realized the effect? The subconscious blanket that wraps this piece and it’s viewer gives this video the ability to surpass the ordinary and sleep with the mystics.
