Does my community college course count as a UCSD course toward my major?
Visit the ASSIST website at: www.assist.org (www.assist.org). If the course listed on ASSIST at your community college directly articulates (equals) with a major course at UCSD, you will NOT need to take this class at UCSD.
If there is not a class at your community college that directly articulates (equals) as a major course at UCSD, you may petition to have the course count with a faculty advisor once you are a continuing student at UCSD. You must be attending classes at UCSD during Fall, Winter, or Spring quarters in order to petition courses from other universities. Hence, you may not petition courses prior to attending regular quarter courses at UCSD.
We encourage all students to petition any courses during their first quarter at UCSD so that students will know what courses they should take for the remainder of their time at UCSD.
The Visual Arts department will only accept UC TRANSFERABLE COURSES to be petitioned for UCSD courses. Non-transferable courses may not count toward courses at UCSD.
Non-articulated community college courses may be petitioned to count as lower division courses at UCSD.
What are production courses, and how many may I take each quarter?
Courses considered "production" are in the Media and ICAM majors only. Production courses are numbered:
VIS 109, 131, 132, 140/ICAM 101, 141A, 141B, 145A/ICAM 102, 145B, 147A-B, 164-168, 171-178, 180A-184, ICAM 120, and ICAM 160A-B
Students are limited to two (2) upper division production courses each quarter.
During a students last three quarters at UCSD, he/she may take three (3) production courses during one (1) of those three (3) quarters. The student must come to the department office during advising hours to be put on an approved list to enroll in three (3) production courses for the upcoming quarter (prior to enrolling in classes for the quarter). Students who are not on the approved list may be administratively dropped from their third production course that they enrolled in.
What courses should I be taking during my first quarter?
If you are an Art History major:
VIS 21A or 21B
VIS 1,2,3,60, or 70N

If you are a Studio major:

If you are a ICAM major:

*you must complete VIS 1 and 84 during Fall quarter because the course is only offered once per academic year.
**We highly encourage all ICAM majors to enroll in VIS/ICAM 40 during their first quarter at UCSD.
If you are a Media major:
VIS 1, VIS 2 or VIS 3
VIS/ICAM 40 (computing emphasis)
VIS 60 (photography emphasis)*
OR
VIS 70N (film and video or photography emphasis)**
VIS 84
*VIS 60 is offered every quarter.
**VIS 70N is only offered Fall and Spring quarters.
What courses should I take for the rest of the school year?
For a more comprehensive quarter to quarter plan, please stop by the undergraduate office in Mandeville 216 during advising hours (posted on the department website). We highly encourage all transfer students to come into the department office for advising prior to or during your first quarter at UCSD. Please familiarize yourself with your major course curriculum, course descriptions, and the annual schedule of classes PRIOR to your advising session.
Can I make an appointment to speak with an advisor?
Appointments can be made 24 hours in advance by calling 858-534-2860. We strongly encourage students to make an appointment with an advisor prior to their enrollment time to discuss course schedules.
