The Visual Arts Gallery, located in the new Structural and Materials Engineering Building (SME) at UC San Diego, is dedicated to research-based material practices engaged with both visual art and engineering. It presents artistic and creative collaborations across fields such as structural engineering, nanotechnology, materials science, and computer visualization -- exploring the dynamic interplay between design and fabrication methods, material forms, applied sciences, and cultural practices. It explores the diverse methods of research and production that these practices entail, the forms of reception and interpretation that they enlist, and the forms of organization and display that they summon. Engaging cross-fertilization and conversation among a diverse array of practitioners across the arts and humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, and engineering, the Gallery explores contemporary techniques and theories of materiality and the transformations they introduce in various arenas of culture.
