UC San Diego Visual Arts Presents Open Studios and the 6th Annual Graduate Student Conference

La Jolla, California--The UC San Diego Department of Visual Arts welcomes scholars, prospective students, and community members to the annual graduate student conference and open studios events, taking place on March 9, 2013.  With the recent launch of visual arts initiatives in the Structural and Materials Engineering (SME) building, this year's activities will showcase the research and artistic practice of students both in the Visual Arts Facility (VAF) and new SME building.

Running from, 9:00am until 3:30pm, the day will begin in the SME building with the 6th Annual Graduate Student Conference titled The Nature of Space. As the discipline of geography has slowly withdrawn into a discrete department, issues of space have been integrated into other fields of study. Fittingly, this conference will investigate issues related to space and place within the visual arts. The panel sessions will explore the unique and critical position of the arts and the ability to work outside of imposed structures. Conference coordinators, Sascha Crasnow and Elizabeth D. Miller, have planned two panels with a diverse array of speakers and a keynote address by Dr. Mark Linder, Associate Professor and Chancellor's Fellow in the Humanities at the Syracuse School of Architecture.

Also taking place in the SME building, from 2:00-5:00pm, the department will present an open house of the nine research initiatives housed in the space. The Department of Visual Arts shares this 183,000 state of the art square foot building with structural, biomedical, and nano-engineers from the Jacobs School of Engineering.

"By bringing together members of the Visual Arts faculty with researchers and teachers in engineering, we call attention to the ways our creative artists are working with both traditional and innovative materials. In many ways, our Visual Arts department is a group of materials engineers. Our sculptors, our painters, our digital artists and our social theorists all work together to understand the place of engineered materials in culture and the imagination."-Dean of the Division of Arts and Humanities, Seth Lerer

Running from 3:00-8:00pm at the Visual Arts Facility and SME building, graduate student artists will welcome the public into their studios. Featuring 37 graduate student artists, Open Studios is an opportunity for MFA and Art Practice students to engage the public into the process of their artistic production.

Open Studios will showcase the breadth of talent at the department and will act as a platform for conversations about the work on display. In addition to the ongoing Open Studios, graduate student artists have scheduled a formal social hour with light refreshments on the second floor of the VAF from 5-6pm.  Activities will continue into the evening and a presentation of performances and film screenings will take place from 6-8pm at the VAF Performance Space.
