Winners of CICIS 2017 prize for best student paper announced

The Prize Committee assessed the best graduate student paper delivered at the 2017 CICIS on three grounds: interesting and accurate textual readings, an imaginative approach, and a broader contribution to theory or scholarship beyond the primary focus. 

Committee members were so closely divided on two papers that they have decided to split the prize between Viola Ardeni, “Beauty and the Beast, Italian Style? Fairy Tale Revisionism and Italian Locations in Matteo Garrone’s Tale of Tales,” and Andrew Hiltzik, “Canti Carnascialeschi: Sexuality, Industry, and Communal Integrity in the Carnival of Renaissance Florence.”

Viola Ardeni’s paper does the most to deal with the “genius loci” concept of the conference, which also seems to have been generative for her thinking about the film. It asks an interesting theoretical question:  how does place “speak,” how do “rocks, water, vegetation” tell their own stories and become the vehicle of complex histories in literature, film etc? She develops this question in very stimulating ways that stage a conversation with a broad range of scholars and theorists, promoting the historicity of place and the local with implications for environmental studies, critiques of globalization, etc. Her conclusion is especially interesting, namely that the specificity of place in the film adaptation actually gives rise to the unreal in an important way.

Andrew Hiltzik’s paper connects his reading of the canti to the institutions of Florentine politics; it is excellent in vividly bringing to the fore the complexities of artisanal and mercantile culture in 15th-16th- century Florence and making them “strange" for modern readers. Because he is bringing together a wealth of texts, Hiltzik’s close readings are rich. His paper is theoretically thoughtful (the reflections on Bakhtin are more than simply nods); His piece is the one that does the most to engage in larger theoretical debates and to position his readings in a way that makes them interesting/relevant outside the more narrow field of his focus.
