MCASD and the University of California, San Diego have long collaborated to bring internationally acclaimed artists to San Diego through the annual Russell Lecture program.

This year’s lecture features acclaimed LA-based multimedia artist Zackary Drucker. Known for her large-scale photographs that break down the way we think about gender, sexuality, and seeing, Drucker has performed and exhibited her work internationally in museums, galleries, and film festivals including the Whitney Biennial 2014, MoMA PS1, Hammer Museum, Art Gallery of Ontario, and  SFMoMA, among others. The Museum holds several photographs by the artist in its permanent collection, including a selection of works from the Relationship series (2008–2013).

Drucker is an Emmy-nominated Producer for the docuseries This Is Me, as well as a Producer on the Golden Globe and Emmy-winning television series Transparent.

The Russell Foundation was established in the will of Betty Russell, one of MCASD's founding docents and a long-time supporter of UC San Diego. She specified that funds from the foundation should help "foster the appreciation and study of the modern visual arts and creativity of young artists" through support for the Museum and the University. Past Russell Lecture speakers have included Miguel Calderón (2017), Andrea Bowers (2016), Judith Barry (2015), Tacita Dean (2014), Byron Kim (2013), Tania Bruguera (2012), and Isaac Julien (2011).

Presented with support from MCASD and University Centers.
