The Department of Visual Arts' 2,000-square-foot darkroom facility, built in 1992, has played an integral role in fostering the creative endeavors of our faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate photographers. Originally designed to support independent research, the darkroom has grown into a vital teaching space, ensuring that the tradition of photographic excellence continues in our department.

However, just weeks before the start of Fall Quarter 2024, a significant flood damaged the facility, rendering all darkroom bays unsafe and unusable. While this setback has been devastating, we are determined not only to rebuild, but to transform this space into a cutting-edge environment that will support the next generation of photographers. We are making strategic updates to the darkroom, including:

  • Expanding the darkroom space to enhance teaching and critique areas
  • Increasing the number of enlarger stations for greater accessibility
  • Allocating space for alternative processes to foster creative exploration
  • Upgrading infrastructure with proper ventilation, sinks, and water purifiers to ensure a safe and functional environment

We need your support to make these updates a reality. Your generous donation will help us create a state-of-the-art facility that empowers our students and faculty to push the boundaries of their craft. Together, we can preserve the legacy of the Department of Visual Arts and provide the tools needed to inspire the next generation of photographers.

Please consider donating today to help us restore and upgrade this essential space. Every contribution, large or small, makes a difference. Thank you for supporting the future of photographic education at our department.
