The students of VIS 108: Advanced Projects in Art were tasked with creating original new works of any medium that illustrate their vision for the “near future” – warts and all. Radical climate disturbance, AI and personal identity, dystopia and utopia, and the relation of technology to human connection are some themes revealed in their work. Inspiration and discussion came from screenings of and reflections on films and TV shows set in the “near future” and the discussion of work made not only by contemporary artists thinking about life, culture, and society beyond the now, but of the work students were creating across the quarter.
