Mandeville Woodshop

The Mandeville Woodshop is a 1,200 sqft hands-on workspace for Visual Arts majors to explore woodworking, sculpture, painting, and more. Equipped with professional tools—including saws, routers, sanders, and a 4x4 vacuum former—the shop supports both practical and experimental projects. Students gain access after completing a safety tutorial and orientation, and can work during supervised hours with support from experienced staff. Regular demos and guided sessions promote skill-building, creative exploration, and safe, collaborative learning.

Access and Safety

Students must complete a shop orientation both online at the facilities instructional support canvas page, and at the shop with a supervised staff member leading the tutorial.

VAF Wood & Metal Shops

The Visual Arts Facility (VAF) is home to the department’s primary fabrication spaces located in building 1: a woodshop/metal shop, a ceramics studio, and a special projects space. These studios are designed to support advanced material research, cross-disciplinary experimentation, and large-scale production—serving MFA and PhD students, faculty, and, during instructional support hours, undergraduates.

VAF Ceramic Shop

Our modest yet efficient ceramic shop offers throwing wheels, 2 electric kilns, an array of hand building tools, and a 3D PotterBot for clay printing. This space supports functional ceramics and conceptual work in clay-based practices.

Access and Safety

This space is designed for MFA, PHD, and faculty research. Students must complete a safety tutorial with a supervised staff member, faculty member, or student leading the tutorial before they can be granted access.
