Biography:

PhD 2022

Vanessa Bateman completed a PhD in Art History, Theory, and Criticism with a Specialization in Anthropogeny from the Center for Academic Research and Training in Anthropogeny (CARTA) at UC San Diego in 2022. Her work analyzes the representation of animals in North American art and visual culture from the nineteenth century until present, informed by the environmental humanities and animal history. Vanessa is a postdoctoral fellow at Maastricht University (Netherlands) on the project “Moving Animals: A History of Science, Media, and Policy in the Twentieth Century.” Publications include “"I’m in a cage": a historical perspective on Tiger King’s animals,” in Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness A Docalogue (Routledge, 2021) and an interview with contemporary artist Donna Szoke in Exhibiting Digital Animalities (Public Books, 2021). She is a recipient of a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Graduate Fellowship (SSHRC) and a CARTA Graduate Student Fellowship and holds an MA from OCAD University (Toronto).
