Yi Liu is a doctoral candidate at the University of California, San Diego in Art History, Criticism, and Theory. She specializes in East Asian art and the history of photography. In particular, her research focuses on the visual culture of China in relation to epistemology, nationalism, and modernity across the twentieth century. Treating photography as a critical agent for knowledge production and social formation, her dissertation probes the making of the photobooks about China in the first half of the 20th century, to examine how photography interacts with nation-building, printing technology, and publishing culture in the entanglement of imperial gaze and local nationalism. She has received fellowships from the Russell Foundation and Taiwan-American Education Trust.
Liu is a former editor of The Art Newspaper (China), and her writing has been featured in Christie’s Magazine and Ran Dian, among others. She also has taught courses in the history of Western Art, photography, and modern and contemporary art history and theory as an adjunct lecturer at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Tianjin Normal University in China. She holds an M.A. in art history from Ohio University.
