Biography:

Johnnie Chatman is a lens-based artist currently working in Southern California. He holds an MFA in Photography, Video & Related Media from the School of Visual Arts. He is currently a Katzin Scholar and enrolled in doctoral studies in Art History, Theory, and Criticism with an emphasis in Art Practice at the University of California San Diego. His research will explore notions around landscape, tourism, and visual culture and its relationship with black history and the American West.

Chatman's work has been featured in exhibitions across the United States including at Fraenkel Gallery, HereArts, and SF Camerawork. His work can be found in collections at the Figge Art Museum and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. In 2020, he was announced as a recipient of the En Foco Photography Fellowship. His work has been featured in publications including Dear Dave, Nueva Luz, and Zoetrope All-Story. He is also the founder and curator of Terms & Conditions, an experimental film screening series.

Center for the Photographic Art; I’m Not The Only One at Fraenkel Gallery; and Magnetic West: Enduring Allure of the American West at Figge Art Museum and Sioux Art Center.
