Biography:
My field of study is 19th century French paintings, especially Impressionism. I tend to formulate Impressionism not just as a period event, but as a recurrent rhetorical strategy that has been deployed across different historical periods and in different societies, or as a formal sequence eternally open to further modifications. I am also interested in the Impressionism's relation to the historical ontology of the easel painting overall, and the cross-fertilization between painting and modern psychological novel.
Other interests:
- Art and religion, history of religion, Evangelism
- Historiography of art: iconological studies, social history of art, history of form
- Realism and Landscape Paintings worldwide
- Art and Anthropology
- Art and Aesthetics, Epistemology
- Art and the French Revolution
I held a BA in history from New York University Shanghai, and an MA in art history from New York University Institute of Fine Arts.
